Cherargei Criticises Governor Sakaja Over Failure to Honour Senate Summons, Warns of Possible Enforcement Action

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has sharply criticised Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja after he failed to appear before the Senate Public Accounts Committee despite being formally summoned.

Speaking on Monday, Cherargei said the governor’s absence shows disregard for constitutional institutions and undermines the Senate’s oversight role in ensuring accountability in county governments.

“The governor cannot continue ignoring summons from a constitutional body. This is unacceptable,” Cherargei stated, adding that such actions weaken public trust in governance.

He further warned that if Sakaja continues to fail to appear, senators may take stronger enforcement measures to compel his attendance.

“If he does not present himself, the police should ensure he is brought before the committee,” he said.

Cherargei also suggested that lawmakers are prepared to take additional steps to ensure compliance, stressing that no public official should be above the law or Senate oversight.

The Senate Public Accounts Committee has been seeking to question Governor Sakaja over issues linked to financial management and accountability within the Nairobi County Government.

The governor’s repeated absence has intensified tensions between the Senate and county executives, highlighting ongoing disputes over oversight authority and institutional cooperation.

Cherargei maintained that all public officers must comply with lawful summons, warning that failure to do so risks undermining governance structures and eroding public confidence.

The standoff is expected to continue if Sakaja does not appear before the committee, with senators indicating readiness to pursue further action.
