Dennis Itumbi Alleges President Ruto Pressured Over Kawira Mwangaza Impeachment

Former head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy, Dennis Itumbi, has claimed that President William Ruto faced pressure to support the impeachment of former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

On March 8, 2026, Itumbi took to social media to recount events surrounding the death of former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Francis Ogolla, alleging that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua refused to accompany President Ruto to Nairobi to announce Ogolla’s passing.

According to Itumbi, on the day of General Ogolla’s death, President Ruto personally dispatched a military chopper to transport the bodies and had called Rigathi to join him for the official announcement in Nairobi.

Rigathi allegedly declined, citing a meeting with leaders in Meru – a meeting reportedly convened by those seeking to impeach Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Itumbi criticized Rigathi, claiming he portrayed himself as a champion for Meru residents while simultaneously leading calls for the Governor’s impeachment.

He further alleged that President Ruto opposed the impeachment and had attempted to mediate by urging Meru leaders to discuss the matter and reach a consensus without removing Kawira from office.

The revelations have reignited debates over the political maneuvering behind Meru County’s leadership disputes and the extent of influence exerted by national leaders in local governance matters.
