Mama Lucia, affectionately called Nyina wa Martin, passed away on March 5 at the age of 93. Her son, Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, said she had battled dementia for several years and later faced respiratory challenges, passing peacefully surrounded by family and caregivers.
In an emotional tribute, the senator described his mother as a resilient family pillar who, alongside her late husband, Stephen Kimani Thang’wa, raised a large household with love, discipline, and dedication.
“For years, my mother fought dementia. I’m unsure if she ever realized I had become the Senator for Kiambu… Sleep peacefully, Mum. I will always be your 13th,” he shared.
Prior to the funeral, Gachagua visited the family home in Ruiru on March 12, 2026, to personally convey his condolences. He praised Mama Lucia’s life of service, faith, and generosity, noting the positive impact she had on many lives.
“Mama Lucia led an inspiring life centered on family, faith, and helping others. To Senator Thang’wa and his siblings, please accept my sincere condolences… May the Lord grant Mama Lucia eternal peace,” Gachagua said.
The funeral ceremony marked a final farewell to a woman remembered for her devotion to family and community.
