President William Ruto has signed the Judges’ Retirement Benefits Act into law at State House, Nairobi, establishing a structured retirement benefits framework for judges of Kenya’s superior courts.
The new law introduces the Judges’ Retirement Benefits Fund for judges appointed after its commencement. Under the scheme, judges will contribute 7.5% of their basic salary, while the government matches this with a 15% contribution.
The fund is managed to ensure sustainable payouts, with benefits charged directly to the Consolidated Fund.
Beyond pensions, the Act provides retired judges with medical cover, diplomatic passports, and access to government airport lounges, recognizing the unique responsibilities and risks of judicial service.
Supporters of the law say it strengthens judicial independence by safeguarding judges from financial pressures, allowing them to make impartial decisions without concern for their post-retirement security.
This legislation ensures that judges can retire with dignity and continued support, reinforcing confidence in Kenya’s judicial system.
