There was confusion and drama at the funeral of 74-year-old Mzee Francis Ngari in Mwea, Kirinyaga County.
The situation turned chaotic when the area Member of Parliament, Mary Maingi, grabbed the microphone while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was speaking to mourners through a phone call.
Before the incident, Tebere Ward MCA Peter Karinga had told the crowd that Gachagua wanted to pass his condolences. He also said that Gachagua and the late Ngari were former classmates at Kianyaga High School.
While speaking on the phone, Gachagua criticized the government. He claimed that leaders were working together in ways that were making citizens poorer, especially through rice imports.
He also accused the local MP of supporting the government instead of helping the people.
As he continued speaking, MP Mary Maingi, who had been seated quietly, suddenly stood up and started shouting “shame on you.”
This led to a heated exchange between her and the leaders who were speaking with Gachagua, briefly stopping the burial ceremony.
