Government Backs Justice Njoki Ndungu’s Bid for ICC Judgeship, Launches Diplomatic Campaign

The government has officially declared full support for Justice Njoki Ndungu’s bid to become a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC), based in The Hague.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi confirmed that a coordinated diplomatic strategy has been launched to boost her chances of securing the position.

Speaking after a meeting with Chief Justice Martha Koome and Justice Njoki Ndungu at the Railways Headquarters office in Nairobi, Mudavadi said both the Judiciary and the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs have already begun planning how to present Kenya’s candidate on the international stage.

He further noted that the candidacy has the backing of President William Ruto and has already received Cabinet approval.

“We assured the Judiciary that the candidacy has the tacit backing of President William Ruto and that the Cabinet had endorsed it,” Mudavadi stated.

The ICC is expected to elect six new judges during the Assembly of States Parties session scheduled for December 7–17, 2026, in New York.

At least 15 candidates have already expressed interest in the positions, including eight from Africa, with the application deadline set for April 12.

Mudavadi said Kenya has put in place a structured campaign involving multiple government agencies aimed at rallying international support for Justice Ndungu’s election.

“We intend to run a strong campaign that will ensure victory for our candidate. We will engage all stakeholders who have voting rights,” he added.

He further emphasized that the Judiciary, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other stakeholders will work together in a multi-agency approach to promote Kenya’s bid.

Mudavadi also praised the Kenyan Judiciary for its strong global reputation, describing it as highly respected for its independence and legal expertise.

Chief Justice Martha Koome echoed his remarks, calling Njoki Ndungu one of Kenya’s most distinguished legal minds and urging full support for her candidacy.

Justice Ndungu, on her part, expressed confidence in her bid, saying she is committed to representing Kenya effectively on the international stage if elected.

“I will ensure Kenya is well represented internationally. My victory will be a victory for all Kenyans,” she said.

The meeting was also attended by senior diplomats from Kenya’s missions in the Netherlands, Ethiopia, and the United Nations in New York, reflecting the high-level coordination behind the campaign.
