A political storm is unfolding within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) after the breakaway Linda Mwananchi faction announced plans to field its own presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election, exposing widening divisions in the opposition party.
The declaration was made during a lively rally in Kisumu, where supporters marched through the streets before converging at the K’Owuor grounds in Kibos, signaling a bold new direction that directly challenges ODM’s current leadership and strategy.
Led by Siaya Governor James Orengo, the faction claimed to be the true custodian of Raila Odinga’s political ideals and vowed to adopt a more aggressive and independent stance ahead of the next election cycle.
Addressing supporters, Orengo insisted that the group would not remain politically passive, declaring that by 2027, Linda Mwananchi would present its own presidential candidate. His remarks were met with loud cheers, but also raised tensions within ODM.
In a dramatic escalation, Orengo announced what appeared to be a parallel leadership structure, naming himself acting party leader, with Godfrey Osotsi as deputy and Edwin Sifuna as secretary general — a move widely seen as a direct challenge to ODM’s official hierarchy.
He also accused some party leaders of aligning too closely with the government of President William Ruto, warning that such individuals should leave the party.
Orengo further insisted that ODM must not be influenced from State House, saying those perceived to be collaborating with the ruling side had betrayed the party’s principles and should step aside.
Echoing his sentiments, Sifuna dismissed any possibility of cooperation with the current administration, accusing it of repression and poor governance.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino took a more radical tone, urging younger leaders to demand political inclusion and warning that they would reshape the political system if excluded.
Meanwhile, Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka urged caution, reminding leaders of the historical legacy of Luo political leadership and warning against actions that could weaken it.
The emergence of the Linda Mwananchi faction highlights growing tensions within ODM as debates over succession and political direction intensify ahead of 2027.
With opposition unity still uncertain and President Ruto strengthening his political base, analysts say the split could either reshape the opposition landscape or deepen its divisions further.
