Kenyan Embassy Warns Citizens in South Africa as Protests Turn Violent

Kenyans living in South Africa have been urged to stay alert and take safety precautions following rising tensions and protests targeting foreign nationals.

In an advisory issued on May 4, the Kenya High Commission in Pretoria warned that recent demonstrations and isolated attacks in parts of South Africa could put foreigners, including Kenyans, at risk.

The embassy advised Kenyans to avoid areas where protests are taking place and to remain vigilant at all times. They were also encouraged to follow instructions from local authorities and stay updated on the situation.

In addition, citizens were told to always carry valid identification documents and remain in contact with security agencies. In case of any emergency or attack, they should report to the South African Police Service and inform the Kenyan High Commission for assistance.

The warning comes amid a surge in xenophobic violence reported in major cities such as Johannesburg and Cape Town, where foreign nationals and their businesses have been targeted by angry groups.

Some protests have been linked to anti-immigrant movements blaming foreigners for unemployment and crime, leading to destruction of property and displacement of many people.

International concern has also grown over the situation, with global and regional bodies condemning the attacks and calling for better protection of migrants.

Overall, the advisory highlights growing safety concerns for Kenyans in South Africa, as authorities closely monitor the situation and urge citizens to remain cautious.
