Political Tension Rises as Wangui Ngirici Warns Kirinyaga Against ‘Imposed Leaders’

Former Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici has sparked fresh political debate after strongly warning against attempts to impose leaders on Kirinyaga residents ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a public event in Kirinyaga County, Ngirici criticized what she described as growing “gender politics” and interference from powerful political figures trying to influence the county’s gubernatorial succession race.

Without directly naming individuals, the former lawmaker appeared to respond to recent political endorsements surrounding the Kirinyaga governor race, insisting that residents are capable of choosing their own leaders without pressure from outsiders.

“Kirinyaga people are wise enough to elect leaders of their choice without being directed by leaders from outside the county,” Ngirici said during the gathering.

She further warned national and regional political figures against attempting to dictate the county’s political direction, saying leadership decisions should remain in the hands of local voters.

Ngirici also urged residents to carefully examine candidates seeking elective seats and reject political intimidation or forced endorsements ahead of the elections.

Her remarks come at a time when political temperatures are rising in Kirinyaga, with several leaders already positioning themselves for the gubernatorial contest expected after Governor Anne Waiguru completes her final term.

The former MP has recently intensified criticism of sections of the Kenya Kwanza administration, accusing some leaders of focusing too much on early campaigns instead of service delivery. She has also defended former President Uhuru Kenyatta and ex-Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua amid growing political divisions in the Mt Kenya region.

Political analysts now see Kirinyaga as one of the key battlegrounds likely to shape Mt Kenya politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
