Drama unfolded outside Jogoo House in Nairobi on Monday after activists staged protests demanding the resignation of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.
The protesters accused the police leadership of failing to address concerns surrounding alleged police brutality, deaths in custody and reports of abductions.
Activist Julius Kamau led the demonstration and reportedly chained himself to the gates of Jogoo House as the group called for greater accountability within the National Police Service.
A confrontation later broke out between the protesters and police officers as the activists attempted to make their demands known. Six activists were reportedly arrested as officers moved to stop the group from addressing the media.
The protesters also raised concerns over the recent violence witnessed in Homa Bay, linking the incident to wider questions about the police response during political gatherings.
They called for independent investigations into alleged abductions and cases involving young protesters, while demanding stronger accountability from security agencies.
The latest demonstration comes as pressure continues to mount on IG Kanja over various incidents involving the police. Calls for his resignation have previously emerged following claims of police failures during political activities and allegations of brutality.
Despite the growing criticism, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has previously defended Kanja, saying he continues to enjoy public confidence.
The National Police Service had not issued an immediate statement regarding Monday's protest or the reported arrests at the time of publication.
The activists' demonstration has once again placed the country's police leadership under public scrutiny, with protesters insisting that accountability and protection of citizens must remain a priority.
