Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo highlighted the development on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, saying the facelift is aimed at preserving the historical importance of the grounds while creating a modern facility for the surrounding community.
Kamukunji holds a special place in Kenya’s political history. It hosted the historic Saba Saba rally on July 7, 1990, an event that became a major milestone in the country’s push for political pluralism, multiparty democracy and greater civil liberties.
According to the government, the redevelopment has been carried out under the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Project, combining heritage conservation with environmental restoration, sports and community services.
The upgraded facility now features an 11-a-side football pitch, seven-a-side and multipurpose playing fields, basketball courts and a boxing ring.
Residents will also have access to children’s play areas, improved walkways, better sanitation facilities and a dedicated mental health corner.
The redevelopment has further introduced a resource centre equipped with a library, social hall and digital museum. An indoor gym, changing rooms, amphitheatre, outdoor gym, gazebos and a tree nursery have also been included.
Omollo said the improvements are intended to keep the historic grounds relevant to younger generations while providing residents with a safe and vibrant public space.
He noted that preserving the site’s history would help ensure that the struggles and experiences that shaped Kenya remain part of conversations about the country’s future.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is also supporting local administration and community engagement around the facility.
The government hopes the renewed grounds will encourage residents to take ownership of the facility while turning the historic site into an important centre for recreation, learning, heritage and community activities.
