In a post shared on X on Wednesday, August 26, Muhoozi said Museveni’s support would give him a massive advantage in the election.
“With my great father, Mzee’s, support I will get 90% in the elections in 2031,” Muhoozi stated while sharing a photo of himself with the Ugandan president.
His latest remarks came shortly after he publicly announced that he plans to contest for Uganda’s highest office in 2031.
In an earlier statement, Muhoozi said he would seek the presidency and expressed confidence that he would emerge victorious.
The announcement has renewed debate over Uganda’s political succession and the possibility of Museveni eventually handing over political influence to his son.
Muhoozi had previously been associated with a possible presidential bid in the 2026 elections but did not contest, instead supporting his father.
His political movement, the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), has also continued grassroots mobilisation following the 2026 elections, further strengthening speculation about his political ambitions.
Muhoozi’s potential candidacy has attracted significant attention in Uganda. A study published in African Affairs found that he is widely viewed as one of the leading potential successors to Museveni, although his public approval remains lower than that of his father.
The study reported that 35 per cent of respondents approved of Muhoozi, compared with 54 per cent who approved of Museveni.
If Muhoozi proceeds with his 2031 presidential ambitions, the election could become a major test of Uganda’s long-running succession debate and whether Museveni’s political influence can successfully be transferred to his son.
The development also comes amid continued political tensions in Uganda following the 2026 presidential election, with opposition figures facing legal and political pressure.
Muhoozi’s latest declaration is therefore likely to keep the succession question firmly at the centre of Uganda’s political debate in the years ahead.
