Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has called for Kenya’s long-term development plans to be protected from disruptions caused by changing political and electoral cycles.
Nyong’o said the country needs to maintain consistency in its development policies instead of repeatedly changing priorities whenever a new election approaches.
He argued that major national projects and development programmes require years of planning and implementation and should not be abandoned because of political transitions.
His remarks come amid renewed discussions on Kenya’s development agenda beyond Vision 2030. A new proposed national blueprint has called for stronger institutions, policy consistency and sustained investment to help Kenya achieve long-term economic growth.
Nyong’o, who chaired the team involved in preparing the proposed new vision, stressed the importance of political commitment in ensuring that development programmes continue across successive administrations.
The proposed blueprint recommends anchoring the country's long-term development vision in law so that future governments cannot easily disrupt it after taking office.
It also proposes stronger institutions to oversee implementation and ensure continuity in national policies.
The recommendations focus on key areas including agriculture, industrialisation, technology, education, healthcare, infrastructure and governance.
Nyong’o maintained that Kenya can achieve greater economic progress if leaders focus on policies that benefit the country over several decades rather than concentrating mainly on the next election.
The debate comes as Kenya prepares to move beyond Vision 2030 and develop a new long-term strategy for the period after 2030.
