Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced new measures aimed at protecting residents from flooding as the city prepares for increased rainfall linked to the expected El Niño weather conditions.
The county government is strengthening its flood preparedness plans, with a focus on areas that have previously experienced serious flooding during periods of heavy rain.
Sakaja said the county is working to improve drainage systems and clear waterways to reduce the risk of blocked drainage channels during heavy downpours.
The measures also include closer monitoring of flood-prone areas and coordination between different county departments to respond quickly whenever flooding occurs.
The governor's announcement comes as weather forecasts point to the possibility of increased rainfall, raising concerns among Nairobi residents living and working in areas vulnerable to flooding.
The county government is also encouraging residents to remain alert and cooperate with authorities during periods of heavy rainfall.
Sakaja said the preparations are intended to minimise disruptions to transport, businesses and homes while protecting lives and property.
Nairobi has experienced severe flooding in recent years, with heavy rains causing road closures, damage to infrastructure and displacement of residents in some parts of the city.
