President William Ruto has hinted at plans to rename Kisumu International Airport after the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Ruto said discussions were already taking place with the Kisumu County government and residents over the possibility of changing the airport’s name to Raila Odinga International Airport.
The President made the remarks on Monday, September 14, 2026, during a media engagement at Kisumu State Lodge as he continued his four-day development tour of the Nyanza region.
Ruto said the proposed name change would be part of efforts to honour Raila, who remained one of Kenya’s most influential political figures for decades.
The proposal comes as the government continues to recognise Raila’s contribution to the country following his death in October 2025.
Ruto also confirmed that Nairobi’s Talanta Stadium will be renamed Raila Odinga International Stadium once construction is completed.
The President said the stadium’s new name had already been decided, while discussions over the Kisumu airport were still ongoing.
Renaming the airport would give Raila’s name a major presence in Kisumu, a region that was closely associated with his political career and support base.
The proposal is likely to attract attention across the country, particularly as leaders continue to discuss Raila’s political legacy and his contribution to Kenya.
Ruto’s remarks also come at a time when his administration has been working closely with leaders from the Nyanza region on development projects and other government programmes.
For now, Kisumu International Airport retains its current name, with any official change expected to follow consultations and the required government processes.
The proposal adds to a series of efforts to honour Raila Odinga’s legacy following his death.
