Residents living in low-lying areas of Garissa and Tana River counties have been warned to move to higher ground ahead of the expected El Niño rains.
Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa said people living near rivers and other flood-prone areas should take the warning seriously and relocate before heavy rains begin.
The warning comes as authorities increase preparations for possible flooding in parts of the country. Garissa and Tana River are considered particularly vulnerable because of the Tana River and the large number of communities living along its flood-prone areas.
Residents have been urged not to wait until floodwaters begin rising before moving to safer locations.
Authorities are also expected to strengthen monitoring of water levels and provide early warnings to communities that could be affected by flooding.
The government has been working with county authorities and other agencies to prepare for the anticipated heavy rains and reduce the possible impact on lives and property.
Residents have also been encouraged to remain alert to official weather and flood warnings and follow instructions from emergency officials.
The precautionary measures are aimed at preventing loss of life, particularly in areas that have experienced flooding during previous rainy seasons.
The warning comes as Kenya steps up preparations for the expected El Niño conditions, with several counties putting measures in place to deal with possible flooding and other weather-related emergencies.
Communities in vulnerable areas have been advised to treat the warnings seriously and make early preparations rather than waiting for an emergency to occur.
