The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has opened applications for an online training programme targeting Senior School and TVET teachers.
The training is designed to equip teachers with skills needed to develop quality examination questions for Competency-Based Assessment.
The programme will run online from October 12 to October 30, 2026.
Teachers interested in the training are required to meet several conditions before applying. They must be actively teaching their area of specialisation at Senior School or Vocational Level under the Stage-Based Curriculum.
Applicants must also have relevant academic and professional qualifications, at least one year of teaching experience and registration with the Teachers Service Commission.
They are also required to obtain a recommendation from the head of their institution and demonstrate a good professional record.
KNEC has advised teachers who have previously completed its item-writing training not to apply again.
Interested teachers are expected to submit their applications through the KNEC examiners' portal before September 30, 2026.
Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted after the selection process.
Teachers who successfully complete the programme will receive certificates. They may also be considered for future national assessment assignments by KNEC depending on the council's needs.
The training is part of efforts to strengthen assessment standards as Kenya continues implementing the Competency-Based Education system.
By training teachers to develop better assessment items, KNEC aims to ensure examination questions are properly aligned with curriculum outcomes and the required levels of thinking.
The programme is therefore expected to give qualified teachers an opportunity to gain additional assessment skills while also increasing their chances of being considered for future KNEC assignments.
