Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali has pledged to improve healthcare services in Mombasa, promising to focus on medical workers, infrastructure and access to treatment.
Ali, who is seeking to lead Mombasa County, said he would prioritise the welfare of healthcare workers and improve facilities so that residents can access quality medical services closer to their homes.
In a statement on Sunday, September 20, Ali said his plan would focus on addressing what he described as challenges facing the county’s healthcare system.
“We will fix Mombasa’s healthcare crisis by prioritising the welfare of health workers, bringing quality healthcare infrastructure closer to the people, and restoring dignity through equitable access to medical care,” he said.
His remarks come amid an ongoing debate over healthcare delivery in Mombasa, including staffing levels, medical infrastructure and the working conditions of health professionals.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir recently said the county had increased its healthcare workforce from 2,239 workers in 2022 to 3,749.
However, the governor also acknowledged that the county still requires about 5,600 healthcare workers based on a workload assessment guided by World Health Organization standards.
Ali has previously raised concerns about healthcare and other public services in Mombasa, calling for improvements in the management of county institutions.
The latest pledge comes as political activity increases in Mombasa ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Ali among the leaders seeking the county's top seat.
He said his focus would be on delivering better services and ensuring Mombasa residents receive healthcare in a more accessible and equitable manner.
