The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has asked former President Uhuru Kenyatta to explain his recent claim that the late Raila Odinga won the 2022 presidential election.
ODM questioned why Uhuru chose to speak about the election several years after the results were announced and after the dispute had already gone through the constitutional process.
The party also questioned why Uhuru’s administration handed over power to President William Ruto if the former president believed that Raila had actually won the election.
ODM said it had previously accepted the outcome after exhausting the available legal channels and decided to focus on moving the country forward.
However, the party said Uhuru’s latest remarks had reopened the debate over the 2022 election and raised new questions among Raila’s supporters.
The former president made the remarks during a Jubilee Party meeting in Nairobi, where he said he remained convinced that Raila had received enough votes to win the election.
According to official results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Ruto received 7,176,141 votes, representing 50.49 per cent, while Raila received 6,942,930 votes, or 48.85 per cent.
Raila challenged the results at the Supreme Court, but the court unanimously upheld Ruto’s victory.
ODM has now called on Uhuru to explain what he knew at the time and why his government proceeded with the transfer of power.
Raila’s family has also expressed disappointment over the former president’s decision to revisit the election, saying the issue should not be reopened several years later.
The renewed debate comes as political parties and leaders continue preparations for the 2027 General Election.
