President William Ruto has formally appointed Dr Duncan Oburu Ojwang as the new chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), while Wilson Sossion and Antonina Lentoijoni have been appointed as members of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The appointments were contained in a Gazette Notice dated August 31, 2026, completing the process that began with their nomination and parliamentary approval.
Ojwang will serve as IPOA chairperson for a six-year term. He takes over the leadership of the civilian police oversight authority as it continues its mandate of monitoring and investigating issues involving the National Police Service.
His appointment follows the departure of former IPOA chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan, who left the position after being appointed to the Court of Appeal.
Meanwhile, former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion and education administrator Antonina Lentoijoni have officially joined the TSC as commissioners.
The two were appointed for six-year terms after Parliament approved their nominations in August.
Sossion's appointment attracted considerable attention because of his previous leadership of the teachers' union and his experience in the education sector. Lentoijoni also brings experience in education administration to the commission.
The appointments come as the TSC continues to oversee major issues affecting teachers, including recruitment, deployment, promotions and the implementation of education reforms.
The new leadership at IPOA and TSC is expected to strengthen the two institutions as they undertake their constitutional and statutory responsibilities.
The appointments also mark the conclusion of a process that involved presidential nominations, parliamentary vetting and approval before the final gazettement.
