Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has raised concerns over what he described as discrimination against persons with disabilities in government institutions.
Wanyonyi said people living with disabilities continue to face difficulties accessing opportunities and services despite existing laws and policies designed to protect their rights.
The lawmaker called for greater inclusion of persons with disabilities in government programmes and employment opportunities. He said public institutions should ensure that people with disabilities are given equal opportunities to participate in the country’s social and economic development.
Wanyonyi also stressed the need for government agencies to improve accessibility and remove barriers that prevent persons with disabilities from fully participating in public life.
He argued that having laws protecting the rights of persons with disabilities was not enough if the policies were not properly implemented.
The MP said more attention should be given to creating an environment where persons with disabilities can compete fairly for jobs and other opportunities.
His remarks have renewed attention on the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, including access to employment, public services and other opportunities.
Wanyonyi urged government institutions to take practical steps to promote equality and ensure persons with disabilities are not left behind in national development.
