The National Assembly has approved former Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Ibrahim Ali as the female non-Member Commissioner of the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC).
Her approval on Wednesday, October 7, completed the parliamentary process for her appointment to the commission. She will take over from former commissioner Rachel Ameso, whose term has expired.
Fatuma’s appointment followed the Senate’s approval of her nomination after the Standing Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights considered her suitability during an approval hearing held on September 28, 2026.
The position is one of the two non-Member seats reserved on the PSC for people with experience in public affairs who are not serving Members of Parliament.
According to Parliament, the recruitment process attracted 75 applicants. Twelve candidates were eventually shortlisted and interviewed, with Fatuma emerging as the highest-scoring candidate.
While presenting the approval motion, PSC Commissioner Patrick Makau said the candidates underwent a detailed assessment covering their academic and professional qualifications, parliamentary experience, leadership abilities and integrity.
The selection process also included public participation and verification of the shortlisted candidates by relevant government agencies.
Fatuma brings previous parliamentary and public service experience to the commission. She served as Wajir Woman Representative and later as a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly.
Supporting her appointment, Adan Keynan said her experience in Parliament and other public institutions would help her understand the needs of MPs and parliamentary staff.
The Parliamentary Service Commission is responsible for providing services and facilities that enable Parliament to carry out its constitutional duties. It also oversees parliamentary staff and works to strengthen the institution’s capacity and independence.
With the National Assembly approval now secured, Fatuma Ibrahim Ali will take up her new role as the female non-Member commissioner of the PSC.
