Civic activist Bob Njagi has formally declared his intention to run for Kenya’s presidency in the 2027 general elections, signaling a transition from grassroots activism to national politics.

The announcement came during an interview on Citizen TV on Thursday night, where Njagi also urged citizens to rally behind his People Power Movement as a platform for citizen representation.

Njagi, who has led numerous civic campaigns in Kenya, said his decision reflects a strategic shift from protest actions to contesting political power.

“We are moving away from protest to power. I will be vying for the Presidency in 2027 and they should be prepared for a serious battle,” he stated, emphasizing the need for an organized political movement to represent ordinary citizens.

The activist recently faced detention in Uganda while attending opposition leader Bobi Wine’s manifesto launch.

In an interview following his release last week, Njagi described the experience as strict and intimidating, with heavy surveillance and prolonged questioning alongside fellow activist Nicholas Oyoo.

“This highlights the risks that activists face across East Africa, but our commitment to civic engagement remains firm,” Njagi told reporters.

The People Power Movement, under Njagi’s leadership, aims to mobilize citizens, particularly young voters, who are increasingly frustrated with traditional political parties.

Kenya’s next general elections are slated for August 2027. Several people have expressed interest in the seat including former chief justice David Maraga and former CS Fred Matiangi as they seek to challenge president Ruto.
