Nairobi County authorities have intensified operations against illegal dumping, with a private vehicle impounded and its driver arrested for disposing of waste at a closed dumpsite in Kiang’ombe.
The incident was confirmed by Nairobi County Environment CEC Geoffrey Mosiria on his official Facebook page.
According to Mosiria, the county had previously closed the Kiang’ombe site, making any disposal there illegal.
The driver apprehended will face prosecution in court. Mosiria emphasized that any Public Service Providers (PSPs) or individuals found dumping waste in unauthorized areas will be impounded and prosecuted without exception.
Nairobi County has in recent years struggled with uncontrolled waste disposal, leading to blocked drains, increased flooding during rains, and public health risks.
The enforcement campaign is part of the county’s broader initiative to restore order in waste management and promote responsible disposal practices among residents and service providers.
“We are committed to restoring order, promoting responsible waste management, and ensuring a clean and dignified environment for all,” Mosiria stated.
The county has also pledged regular monitoring of previously closed dumpsites and illegal disposal hotspots to deter repeat offenses.
Residents have been urged to use authorized collection points and adhere to county waste regulations.
Nairobi County operates several designated waste reception sites, and service providers are required to dispose of collected waste at approved facilities only.
This latest action highlights Nairobi’s ongoing battle with illegal dumping, a long-standing urban challenge that affects sanitation, health, and city aesthetics.
