Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has revealed that his official security team was withdrawn without prior notice or formal explanation, raising concerns over compliance with statutory protection provisions.
The governor, who has been critical of President William Ruto’s government, announced the development on Monday, citing sections of the National Police Service Act that mandate protection for state officers at risk.
Natembeya said the withdrawal contravenes Sections 30 and 31 of the Act, which require the Inspector-General of Police to ensure safety for public officials exposed to heightened security risks.
“There is no court order, no disciplinary communication, and no official explanation for this decision. It not only endangers my safety but also interferes with the smooth execution of county duties,” he stated.
Lawyer Nelson Havi, a former chairperson of the Law Society of Kenya, described the move as reckless.
“The withdrawal of the security detail of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya is an act of cowardice and stupidity of the highest order by those behind it,” Havi said, emphasizing that state protection should not be politicized.
Natembeya has in recent weeks been actively supporting United Opposition candidates in Western Kenya ahead of the upcoming by-elections.
His political involvement has placed him among vocal critics of the Ruto administration, a factor analysts say may heighten sensitivity around his security arrangements.
The National Police Service has yet to provide an explanation for the action or indicate whether the governor’s protection will be restored.
The governor has called for immediate reinstatement of his security detail, urging law enforcement agencies to uphold constitutional standards of fairness and professionalism.
