Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has called for renewed scrutiny of Kenya’s electoral environment after the Malava by-election, arguing that events witnessed during the contest point to deeper challenges in safeguarding voters’ choices.

In a statement shared on X, he said the by-election exposed worrying patterns of intimidation and inducement that could shape the credibility of future national polls.

Natembeya said the Malava contest featured what he described as heavy-handed tactics, including harassment of voters, militarization of the polling environment, and the use of state resources to sway outcomes.

He stated that such actions contradict the democratic principles Kenya has sought to strengthen since the introduction of multiparty politics and subsequent electoral reforms.

According to him, the resilience shown by residents who still participated in the vote demonstrated public determination to protect the ballot despite pressure.

“The contest was marred by intimidation, militarization, and open voter bribery using government resources,” Natembeya said in the statement.

He added that the behaviour displayed during the by-election raised questions about the preparedness of state institutions to guarantee fairness in future electoral exercises.

He further committed to advocating for electoral accountability “through every lawful means.”

The Malava by-election drew national attention due to heightened political competition in Kakamega County, an area often considered a battleground between leading political formations.

By-elections in Kenya tend to attract intensified campaigns as parties seek to demonstrate influence ahead of larger electoral cycles.

Electoral oversight bodies typically review complaints submitted after by-elections, but it remains unclear whether any petitions have been filed regarding the Malava vote.

Natembeya said he intends to continue pressing for adherence to democratic principles, arguing that the legitimacy of future national polls depends on addressing concerns raised during local contests.

He reiterated that the responsibility for protecting the vote lies with institutions and leaders committed to upholding the public will.
