Former Lake Basin Development Authority chair Odoyo Owidi has criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta for publicly backing presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i, describing it as far more visible than his support for late ODM leader Raila Odinga during the 2022 elections.
Owidi took to social media on Friday to express his view, writing: “Uhuru never took Raila Odinga to the mountain, they only danced indoors. Today, two years to the next general election, he is already dancing with Matiang’i on top of Mt Kenya.”
The post has sparked discussion on the contrasting approaches Uhuru has taken in political endorsements.
The Murang’a County event, where Uhuru appeared alongside Matiang’i and senior Jubilee Party delegates, is seen as a strategic push to consolidate support in the Mt. Kenya region ahead of the 2027 elections.
Owidi’s observation underscores a shift from subtle, behind-the-scenes political maneuvering to overt, highly visible alliances.
While Uhuru’s support for Raila in 2022 was largely private and understated, his backing of Matiang’i is unmistakably public, marked by photo opportunities and regionally charged appearances.
With two years to the next general election, political watchers are keenly observing how regional symbolism and high-profile endorsements will shape voter sentiment.
Odoyo Owidi’s remarks highlight the growing attention on how public appearances can be as influential as political alliances themselves.
