Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has raised concerns over the ageing generation in Kenya’s political leadership, following the death of Beryl Achieng Odinga, sister of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In a post on X, Ngunyi described senior politicians as “very old,” warning that their passing signals a fading link to Kenya’s political history.

Beryl Achieng Odinga passed away on November 25, 2025, at Nairobi West Hospital after battling a prolonged illness. Her death came just over a month after the passing of Raila Odinga, who died on October 15, 2025.

Raila’s funeral service was held at Uhuru Park in Nairobi on October 22, 2025, and he was laid to rest at his family home in Bondo, Siaya County, following a national mourning period that drew leaders and citizens from across the country.

In his X post, Ngunyi highlighted the advanced ages of several key political figures, including Beryl Odinga (78), Raila Odinga (80), Oburu Oginga (82), Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o (80), and James Orengo (74). He compared these ages to former President Jomo Kenyatta, who became president at 70 and died at 81, noting that many of today’s leaders are older than Kenyatta was when he assumed office.

“History is dying,” Ngunyi wrote, underscoring his concern about the lack of younger political actors stepping into national leadership roles.

Kenya’s political landscape has long been dominated by veteran leaders who played pivotal roles in shaping post-independence governance and party politics.

Parties such as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) continue to rely on senior figures for strategic direction, raising questions about succession planning and opportunities for emerging politicians.

ODM officials paid tribute to Beryl Odinga as a dedicated public servant, emphasizing her professional contributions while urging respect for the mourning period.

While some critics view Ngunyi’s commentary as a call for generational renewal, others caution that experience and political knowledge remain vital for effective governance.
