Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu has revealed that joining politics came with major financial sacrifices, admitting he was far wealthier before entering public service.

Speaking during an interview on TV47, the first-term senator said that while politics gives him a platform to serve, it has also taken a toll on his personal finances.

“I do not regret being in politics. However, I can honestly say that I was doing much better financially when I was running my businesses before I joined politics,” Nyutu said.

He explained that before becoming a senator, his business ventures brought in steady income and allowed him financial freedom.

Since joining politics, however, he has experienced a significant drop in earnings.

“Right now, I am far below where I used to be in terms of income,” he stated.

Nyutu described politics as a calling rather than a path to riches.

He said many Kenyans wrongly assume that elected leaders automatically become wealthy, yet the reality is different for most. “Being in politics is a calling, not a way to make money,” he noted.

He advised aspiring leaders, especially those targeting Senate seats, to understand the realities of public office before seeking election.

“I would also like to tell those who are aspiring to join politics, especially the Senate, that they should not do it for money. I want to assure them that there is no money to be made there,” Nyutu said.

Nyutu’s comments offer a rare glimpse into the personal cost of leadership and the challenges politicians face behind the scenes.
