The Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS) has officially launched the 2025 National Holiday Sports Camp, drawing 2,990 top-performing athletes from schools across Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, Kisumu, Nyeri, Kakamega, and Wajir.

The programme aims to identify, nurture, and develop young sporting talent, while promoting inclusivity through dedicated events for athletes with disabilities.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, who visited the Nairobi camp alongside Sports PS Elijah Mwangi and KAS officials, emphasized the government’s commitment to structured athlete development.

“This initiative provides young athletes with a platform to refine their skills, gain exposure, and receive mentorship that supports both performance and personal growth,” Mvurya said.

The nine-day camp covers 11 sports disciplines and integrates training, coaching, and mentorship activities designed to build competitive readiness.

At the end of the programme, 560 outstanding participants will be enrolled in a specialized Elite Training Programme in 2026, offering a clear pathway for progression to national and international competition.

Mvurya highlighted the importance of mental well-being, urging coaches and trainers to support athletes holistically.

“Our objective is not just to enhance physical ability but to ensure young athletes receive guidance and support that addresses their overall development,” he said.

The programme also serves as a key scouting platform for Kenya’s future sports representatives.

By incorporating disability sports, the camp aligns with national policies on equal access and participation, ensuring young athletes from diverse backgrounds benefit from high-level training.
