Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has emphasized the importance of culture in fostering community cohesion and boosting tourism during the annual Wachangamwe Cultural Festival held at Ahmed Shahame Mwidani College, Mwingo.
The two-day event, hosted by Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi and supported by the County Government, brought together residents, leaders, and youth to celebrate the region’s rich traditions.
Speaking during the festival, Governor Nassir said the event provided a platform for Mombasa communities to connect with their heritage.
“Culture is the soul of our people and a key pillar of social cohesion and tourism,” he said. “Over the past two days, we have witnessed our traditions come alive, strengthening bonds within our community and instilling a shared sense of identity and pride.”
The festival featured performances showcasing music, dance, storytelling, and art, reflecting the diversity of Mombasa’s cultural landscape.
It also offered local artisans the opportunity to display their crafts, promoting cultural entrepreneurship among youth.
Governor Nassir was joined by Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Mombasa Senator Mwinyihaji Faki, Jomvu MP Bady Twalib, and several Members of County Assembly.
Together, they reiterated their commitment to preserving cultural practices and ensuring inclusive spaces where residents can celebrate their heritage collectively.
The governor highlighted that cultural events are not merely entertainment but serve a broader social and economic purpose.
He pointed out that investing in cultural initiatives strengthens community ties, engages young people, and attracts tourism to the county.
