Hundreds of widows and orphans in Siaya have benefited from a new empowerment initiative under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), designed to extend opportunities to marginalized groups across Kenya.

The program, which focuses on providing skills, training, and financial support, aims to strengthen economic participation from the grassroots to national levels.

The event, held at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, was hosted by Siaya Senator and ODM Party Leader Hon. Oburu Odinga.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, who serves as Patron of the Widows Empowerment Program, joined the local residents to mark the program’s achievements and discuss plans for its expansion.

According to Omollo, the initiative has directly transformed the lives of more than 22,000 widows while supporting approximately 400 community-based organizations.

Over 600 orphans have also been sponsored under the program’s German Language Project, providing them with skills and educational pathways that enhance future opportunities.

“Our goal is to ensure that no vulnerable group is left behind as Kenya pursues inclusive economic growth,” Omollo stated on X.

The gathering, themed “Champions of Hope for Widows,” also highlighted partnerships with local digital hubs and community organizations aimed at strengthening the capacity of widows to engage in sustainable economic activities.

Senator Oburu Odinga emphasized that initiatives like the Widows Empowerment Program are central to creating dignified livelihoods for vulnerable Kenyans.

“Supporting widows and orphans not only addresses immediate needs but also builds resilience and self-reliance,” he said.

Residents at the event expressed optimism, noting that the skills and support received will enable widows and young beneficiaries to participate more effectively in the county’s economic activities.
