President William Ruto on December 12, 2025, turned the spotlight on Kenya’s military as he conferred national honours on 881 Kenyans at a high-profile ceremony at State House, Nairobi.

Among the biggest winners were senior officers from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), celebrated for decades of service and acts of bravery.

Kenya Army Commander Lieutenant General David Kipkemboi Keter and Kenya Air Force Commander Major General Bernard Waliaula were awarded the Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart (MGH), one of the country’s most prestigious honours.

Their recognition underscores years of leadership and strategic contributions that have shaped Kenya’s defence capabilities.

Lieutenant General Keter, with a 35-year military career, has been credited with strengthening army logistics, improving supply chain management, and enhancing operational efficiency.

His tenure, the KDF said, has set high standards of accountability and professionalism, leaving a legacy for future military leaders.

Major General Waliaula, marking 38 years of service, has led successful air operations and bolstered Kenya’s air defence systems.

Beyond the Air Force, he has contributed to national heritage projects, including the Kenya Home and Human Museums and the Science Park in the Lake Turkana Basin, highlighting the multifaceted roles KDF officers can play in nation-building.

The ceremony also honoured frontline bravery. Sergeant Erastus Misiku received the Silver Star (SS) for risking his life to save his Officer Commanding while serving as a sniper under the African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), Sector 6. The KDF described his actions as a clear example of courage and selfless commitment.

State House emphasised that the investiture is a formal process under Chapter 216A of the Laws of Kenya. It recognises individuals whose integrity, excellence, and dedication set lasting examples for the nation.

With this year’s ceremony, KDF officers dominated the honours list, reinforcing the military’s role not just in national security but also in leadership, mentorship, and public service.

The awards serve as both recognition and inspiration for Kenya’s next generation of military personnel.
