Former Chief Justice and 2022 presidential candidate David Maraga has called for a comprehensive investigation into the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, emphasizing the importance of transparency for both families and the nation.
Maraga made the remarks on Tuesday while attending Jirongo’s burial at his Lumakanda home in Kakamega County.
Speaking alongside leaders from the United Democratic Movement (UGM) Party, Maraga stressed that the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death remain unclear.
He urged authorities to ensure all inquiries are fully conducted to provide clarity and uphold public trust.
“Together with leaders from @UGMParty we joined the family and friends of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo to pay our last respects at his home in Lumakanda, Kakamega County. There remain unsettled circumstances surrounding his death. All investigations must be exhausted to give Kenyans the right answers,” Maraga said in a post on X.
Jirongo, who represented Lugari Constituency in Parliament and was a prominent entrepreneur, passed away under circumstances that have sparked public concern.
His death follows a broader pattern of unresolved political fatalities in Kenya, a trend Maraga highlighted as requiring attention for justice and societal healing.
“It is not lost on us that many unresolved political deaths remain forgotten. The truth is imperative if families are to truly heal, and if Kenya is to move forward,” he added, underscoring the need for institutional accountability.
Maraga’s call comes against a backdrop of ongoing debates in Kenya about governance, political transparency, and the protection of democratic processes.
Cases involving high-profile politicians have often drawn scrutiny over investigation standards and timely disclosure of findings, raising public expectations for clarity in politically sensitive incidents.
The burial ceremony attracted family members, political leaders, and community supporters, marking the final farewell for a figure who was both influential and controversial in national politics.
Maraga’s appeal for full disclosure reflects growing public interest in accountability and the broader demand for resolving unresolved political deaths in Kenya.
As investigations continue, citizens and political observers will be watching closely for actions that can provide answers to both Jirongo’s family and the wider public.
