The Sunday Nation has cast a spotlight on the difficult living and working conditions facing junior secondary school teachers serving as interns.

According to the report, several teachers revealed that they are often treated like casual labourers in their stations despite holding university degrees.

The paper notes that the government’s decision to extend internship contracts — instead of confirming the teachers on permanent terms as earlier expected — has exposed the harsh realities they endure.

The Sunday Nation adds that the interns earn a modest monthly stipend of 17,000 shillings, spend long hours in classrooms, and receive no medical allowance.

Many also lack basic teaching equipment required for practical lessons, further complicating their work.
