National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called for the removal of barriers to free movement within the East African Community (EAC) as regional lawmakers gathered in Kampala for the opening of the 15th EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games.

The event took place on Friday afternoon at the Kololo Grounds, bringing together Speakers and parliamentary representatives from across East Africa.

Wetang’ula said Kenya had already taken steps to ease movement by allowing all Africans to enter the country without visa requirements.

He urged legislators from the region to advance similar policies, arguing that enhanced mobility would boost integration and economic cooperation among member states.

The Speaker thanked Uganda for hosting the regional games on short notice after Burundi indicated it could not hold the event this year.

He acknowledged the role of Uganda’s Speaker, Anita Among, in coordinating the hosting arrangements and praised the country’s leadership for offering logistical support.

During his address, Wetang’ula reaffirmed his commitment to deeper EAC integration, noting that the bloc’s founding vision included shared institutions, a common currency and, ultimately, a political federation.

He said the Inter-Parliamentary Games provided an opportunity for lawmakers to strengthen relations beyond formal sittings and build trust essential for regional development.

“We remain committed to broadening and deepening our cooperation as envisaged by the founders of the Community. These games remind us that unity is not only political but also social,” Wetang’ula said in his statement posted on X.

The Speaker also welcomed Somalia’s recent admission into the EAC, describing it as a step that expands the region’s economic and political possibilities.

He said Somalia’s entry underscored the bloc’s growth and its increasing importance on the continental stage.

Wetang’ula further expressed gratitude to Uganda’s leadership under President Yoweri Museveni, Speaker Among and the Ugandan people for hosting the delegation.

He wished participating legislators a successful competition and productive engagements during their stay in Kampala.

Earlier in the day, Wetang’ula had attended an event in Eldoret, where he celebrated the achievements of Kenyan athletes.

He said sports continued to act as a unifying force for East Africa and should remain central in promoting regional cooperation.

The Inter-Parliamentary Games are held annually to foster collaboration among EAC member states through sports and cultural exchange.
