Kenyan National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula participated in a breakfast meeting with fellow East African Community (EAC) parliamentary leaders in Uganda as part of activities surrounding the ongoing EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games.
The session was hosted by Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among.
The Inter-Parliamentary Games, which convene lawmakers from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan, are designed to foster both sporting engagement and legislative collaboration.
Wetangula emphasized that the event offers a platform for lawmakers to strengthen regional ties and advance policies that support East African integration.
During the meeting, participants acknowledged the foundational contributions of EAC architects, including President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, for guiding the bloc’s development.
Wetangula noted that their leadership had laid the groundwork for cooperation that continues to enhance economic, political, and social linkages across member states.
Kenya’s involvement in the EAC dates back to its rejoining the community after initial withdrawal in 1977 and demonstrates a long-standing commitment to regional integration.
Wetangula underscored the importance of collective legislative action, highlighting that coordination among parliaments is key to promoting stability, trade facilitation, and policy harmonization within East Africa.
The breakfast meeting also provided an opportunity for speakers to exchange best practices in legislative oversight and policy implementation.
Wetangula described these interactions as crucial for fostering mutual understanding and ensuring that national parliaments can contribute effectively to EAC initiatives.
Kenya, through Wetangula’s leadership, is positioned to actively engage in such cooperative efforts, reinforcing its influence within East Africa’s legislative and political frameworks.
The EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games will continue over the coming days in Uganda, combining sporting competitions with forums aimed at enhancing legislative dialogue and integration efforts across the region.
