National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has called on law enforcement agencies to conduct a swift and transparent probe into the death of former Lugari MP Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, emphasizing the need for clarity to address public concern.
Speaking on Tuesday at Lumakanda Township Primary School during Jirongo’s funeral, Wetangula, a close friend of the late politician for over 38 years, urged investigators to clearly communicate the process and findings of the inquiry.
“It is only right that leaders present demand clear answers on the circumstances surrounding the passing of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo,” he stated.
The funeral brought together a wide array of national leaders, including Kenya’s former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Opposition Leader Martha Karua, and CS Wycliffe Oparanya.
Governors from western Kenya, led by host H.E. Fernandes Barasa, as well as Members of Parliament and county assembly officials, also attended, joining thousands of mourners from across Kakamega County.
Wetangula highlighted that Jirongo’s death underscored the importance of unity within the Luhya community, a cause the late legislator championed throughout his political career.
He urged leaders and communities to draw lessons from Jirongo’s life, noting that his advocacy for cohesion and collaborative leadership remains relevant in Kenya’s contemporary political landscape.
The Speaker’s appeal comes amid rising public scrutiny over the circumstances of Jirongo’s passing, which has prompted calls from political leaders and community representatives for accountability and transparency.
Wetangula emphasized that a credible investigation would not only provide closure for Jirongo’s family and supporters but also uphold public trust in investigative institutions.
“Investigators must act decisively and transparently to resolve the controversy and offer peace to those affected,” Wetangula added.
His remarks framed the funeral as both a moment of mourning and a call for institutional integrity.
Jirongo, who served as Lugari MP and held cabinet positions during his political career, was widely recognized for his engagement in national politics and his efforts to promote development and unity in western Kenya.
