Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has urged Kenyan youth, particularly first-time voters, to actively register for elections, describing participation at the ballot as a crucial tool for shaping the country’s political future.

The call comes amid heightened political tensions and ongoing debates over youth engagement in governance.

Speaking directly to young Kenyans, Kalonzo emphasized that electoral participation is the most effective way for citizens to influence national leadership.

He highlighted recent incidents where youths who exercised their constitutional rights faced harsh responses, underscoring the importance of using democratic channels to drive change.

“The vote is your constitutional weapon. Use it wisely. One shot. No retreat. No surrender,” Kalonzo said, urging the youth to mobilize themselves and their peers to ensure every eligible citizen obtains a voter’s card.

He repeated the message several times, stressing that collective action through registration is critical for ensuring political accountability.

Kalonzo’s appeal aligns with Kenya’s ongoing efforts to increase youth participation in politics.

With nearly 75% of the population under the age of 35, first-time voters and young constituents have become a decisive demographic in shaping electoral outcomes.

Historically, youth-led voter mobilization campaigns in Kenya have influenced both parliamentary and presidential contests, making early registration campaigns a key strategy for political parties ahead of elections.

The Wiper leader also urged parents, educators, and community leaders to support registration drives, ensuring that young voters understand their constitutional rights and the significance of the ballot.

“Do not allow anyone to intimidate you or suggest that your voice does not matter,” he said, addressing concerns over political apathy and disillusionment among Gen Z and millennial voters.

This renewed focus on voter registration by an opposition leader follows months of protests and debates over government policies affecting the youth, including unemployment and economic opportunities.

By framing voter registration as a civic responsibility, Kalonzo is reinforcing the message that political engagement is a powerful instrument for change within Kenya’s democratic framework.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) continues to encourage eligible Kenyans to register, noting that comprehensive voter rolls are essential for credible and inclusive elections.

Kalonzo’s statements highlight the strategic importance of youth participation in shaping Kenya’s political landscape in the coming election cycle.
