Police officers in Diani, Kwale County, have arrested a suspect believed to be linked to a robbery with violence incident in the area.
The suspect, identified as Bakari Shaban Mwaganzori, is alleged to be associated with a criminal gang commonly known as “Vijana wa Mapanga.”
Authorities say the arrest is part of a wider security operation targeting violent gangs operating along the Coast.
According to police, the suspect was tracked down following complaints from residents over rising insecurity caused by armed groups.
Officers say investigations are ongoing to establish his role in the alleged robbery and to identify other members of the gang.
Police have urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by sharing information about suspected criminals within their neighborhoods.
A senior officer noted that most suspects involved in such crimes are young men who are often known to members of the public.
Parents were also cautioned to remain vigilant, with police warning that the ongoing crackdown on gangs will not spare any individuals involved in criminal activity.
The operation was launched following cases of deaths and injuries linked to violent gangs such as the so-called Panga Boys.
In a related development, police confirmed that two suspected gang members recently surrendered after learning that officers were closing in on them.
Elsewhere, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered investigations after officers were filmed assaulting youths in Nandi County.
The IG acknowledged the incident and stated that the officers involved will face the law.
The police leadership reaffirmed its commitment to restoring security while also ensuring accountability within the service.
