The Trump administration has announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali nationals living in the United States. Somali residents now have two months to leave the US or face deportation.
US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that conditions in Somalia have improved, meaning Somali nationals no longer qualify for TPS. Trump added that allowing them to remain was “contrary to our national interests” and emphasized a “put Americans first” policy.
The administration also warned that naturalized immigrants from Somalia or other countries convicted of fraud could have their US citizenship revoked. Trump referenced alleged fraud in Minnesota’s Somali community as part of the justification, though these claims remain unverified.
The decision has drawn strong criticism from CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which described the move as a “bigoted attack” targeting one of the most vulnerable Black and Muslim communities in the US.
TPS, granted by the Department of Homeland Security, is meant for foreign nationals who cannot safely return to their home countries due to conflict, natural disasters, or other emergencies.
