Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has stirred fresh debate after openly questioning the performance of the Social Health Authority (SHA), saying people in the Mt Kenya region were misled about how well it works.
Speaking to residents, Wamuchomba said many Kenyans were made to believe that the new health system was running smoothly.
She noted that the reality on the ground tells a different story, especially for ordinary families who depend on public health services.
According to the MP, confusion and silence surrounded the rollout of SHA. She said leaders and citizens alike accepted official messages without asking hard questions.
Over time, complaints from patients and health workers began to surface, raising concerns about access to care and delays in services.
Wamuchomba told residents that many people only realized the gaps after personally visiting hospitals. Some were unable to get treatment on time, while others struggled to understand how the system works. She said this left families frustrated and worried about their health and finances.
The legislator stressed that her comments were not meant to attack anyone, but to push for honesty and improvement. She said leaders have a duty to speak out when policies fail to meet the needs of the people. For her, silence would mean betraying those who elected her.
She urged the government to listen to feedback from citizens and medical staff. Wamuchomba said fixing the system early would save lives and restore public trust. She also called on leaders from Mt Kenya to stop defending policies blindly and instead stand with the people.
As the debate continues, her remarks have opened space for wider discussion on health reforms. Many now wait to see whether concerns raised will lead to real changes, or remain words spoken at a rally.
