The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has officially outlined the minimum subject requirements for students seeking admission into engineering degree programmes in Kenyan universities.
The guidelines are meant to help KCSE candidates make informed decisions during course selection under the ongoing 2026 placement cycle.
Engineering remains one of the most competitive and highly sought-after fields in Kenya, with strict academic thresholds to ensure students are prepared for the demanding nature of the courses.
Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) Requirements
Students applying for a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree must attain:
C+ in Mathematics
C+ in Physics
C+ in Chemistry
C+ in either English or Kiswahili
C+ in a fourth cluster subject (such as Biology, Geography, or any Group III, IV or V subject where applicable)
Eligible programmes under this category include:
Aeronautical Engineering
Chemical and Process Engineering
Civil and Structural Engineering
Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Mechanical and Production Engineering
Industrial and Textile Engineering
These disciplines play a major role in Kenya’s infrastructure, manufacturing, and technology sectors.
Bachelor of Science (BSc) Engineering
Requirements
Students applying for BSc engineering programmes must meet the same minimum grades:
C+ in Mathematics
C+ in Physics
C+ in Chemistry
C+ in English or Kiswahili
Required fourth cluster subject
Specialisations include:
Civil Engineering
Electrical and Communication Engineering
Electronic and Computer Engineering
Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering
Mechatronic Engineering
Water and Environmental Engineering
Agricultural Engineering
Telecommunication and Information Engineering
Aerospace Engineering
Chemical Engineering
Marine Engineering
Petroleum Engineering
Mining and Mineral Process Engineering
Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering
This programme has slightly different requirements:
C+ in Mathematics (Alternative A)
C– in Physics
C– in Chemistry
C– in Biology
The course focuses on engineering applications in agriculture, food production, and environmental sustainability.
Technology and Renewable Energy Programmes
Applicants must have:
C+ in Mathematics (Alternative A)
C+ in Physics
C– in Chemistry
Courses include:
Civil Engineering Technology
Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology
Medical Engineering
Industrial Technology
Renewable Energy and Environmental Physics
Education-Based Engineering Courses
For Bachelor of Education in Technology (Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical & Electronics):
C+ in Mathematics (Alternative A)
C– in Physics
C– in Chemistry
KUCCPS has advised students to carefully review all programme requirements on its official portal before submitting applications.
Meeting the minimum grades does not automatically guarantee placement, as competition and limited university slots also influence final selection.
With the 2026 placement cycle ongoing, candidates are encouraged to align their subject performance with their career ambitions to improve their chances of securing admission into their preferred engineering discipline.
