Busia Women Aspirants Demand More Security Ahead of 2027 Elections

Women seeking elective positions in Busia County have called for stronger security measures during the campaign period and the 2027 General Election.

The aspirants said concerns over attacks, intimidation and harassment could discourage women from taking part in politics and limit their ability to campaign freely.

Speaking during a forum that brought together political aspirants, electoral officials and security representatives in Busia, the women said they often face additional challenges when participating in political activities.

Bwiri Ward Representative Beatrice Kanoti said inadequate security can leave women vulnerable to harassment and disruption during political meetings.

Busia nominated ward representative Monica Mung’ala urged security officials to engage directly with women candidates and develop measures that would make political campaigns safer for them.

Other aspirants also reported facing intimidation from political opponents, with some saying the pressure had extended to their families and personal lives.

Youth representatives at the forum raised concerns about political violence and the use of young people to cause disruptions during election campaigns. They urged political leaders to embrace peaceful competition.

The forum was organised by the Community Empowerment and Development Centre in partnership with Uraia and brought together political leaders, aspirants and key electoral stakeholders.

An IEBC official urged political candidates to respect human rights and avoid violence during the election period. Leaders were also encouraged to reject the use of groups of youths to intimidate political opponents.

The calls for enhanced security come amid renewed concerns over political violence following clashes during political rallies in Homa Bay.

The Busia aspirants now want security agencies to take preventive measures early to ensure women and other political candidates can participate in the 2027 elections without fear or intimidation.
