Ledama Promises to Cut Official Campaign Period to Three Months If Elected President

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has proposed limiting Kenya’s official political campaign period to a maximum of three months if he becomes President.

Olekina said lengthy and unregulated political campaigns have contributed to violence, insults and divisions among Kenyans.

The senator argued that politicians should spend more time focusing on development rather than engaging in continuous political mobilisation.

He said that, if elected, he would work with relevant institutions, including the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), to ensure campaign rules are properly enforced.

Olekina also called for tougher penalties against politicians and supporters who violate campaign regulations.

His proposal comes at a time when political activity is already intensifying ahead of the 2027 General Election, with politicians holding rallies and building support across the country.

The senator warned that prolonged political activity could increase tensions and create an environment where violence and political intolerance thrive.

His remarks also come amid recent incidents of violence and disruption at political gatherings, including attacks on journalists and damage to media equipment.

Olekina said Kenya needs leaders who concentrate on improving the country rather than keeping the nation in a permanent campaign mood.

He urged the electoral authorities to take a stronger approach in regulating political activities and ensuring that campaign rules are followed.

The proposal is likely to fuel debate over how early political campaigns should begin and whether stricter controls could help reduce political violence and tension ahead of future elections.
