Kenya is seeking to move ahead with the planned expansion of the Nairobi Northern Bypass as discussions with Chinese development officials continue.
The project was among three major infrastructure programmes discussed during a meeting in Beijing between National Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo and Liu Junfeng, Vice Chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA).
Kiptoo said Kenya would continue working with Chinese officials to move the projects from the commitment stage to actual implementation.
The Northern Bypass currently covers about 20.2 kilometres between Ruaka in Kiambu County and Ruiru, where it connects with the Eastern Bypass. The road is currently a single carriageway, but the government approved plans in 2025 to convert it into a dual carriageway.
The planned upgrade will include eight interchanges, overpasses and underpasses. It will also provide pedestrian walkways, cycling paths, better drainage and improvements to connecting roads.
The other projects discussed were the Bosto Dam Water Supply Project in Bomet County and the Muthaiga-Kiambu-Ndumberi Road upgrade.
The Muthaiga-Kiambu-Ndumberi road covers about 23.5 kilometres and is already further along in the implementation process, with an engineering, procurement and construction contract signed in March 2026.
The talks also covered China's support for Kenya's health sector and assistance for drought response.
Kenya has previously secured Chinese financing approvals for the Northern Bypass and Bosto Dam projects, with the government now working to advance them toward implementation.
