Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed officials involved in the preparations for the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations to rely on existing government structures instead of seeking additional allowances.
Murkomen issued the directive on Sunday, September 20, during a meeting on preparations for the Mashujaa Day sporting activities in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
He said government and county officers whose normal duties include coordinating public programmes should handle the preparations as part of their regular responsibilities.
According to Murkomen, county commissioners, chiefs, village elders and other government administrators will support the activities without receiving additional payments for duties performed within their usual areas of work.
The Interior CS said the approach was intended to reduce expenses linked to allowances, transport and other administrative costs.
He also directed county governments to use their existing health systems during the activities. County health officials will coordinate medical personnel and ambulances as part of their normal duties.
The sporting activities are part of wider preparations for Mashujaa Day, which will be celebrated on October 20, 2026. Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet and Nandi are co-hosting this year's celebrations.
The government has also planned sporting and cultural activities ahead of the main celebrations in Eldoret.
Murkomen said using existing government structures would allow more of the available resources to be directed towards the intended beneficiaries rather than administrative expenses.
The directive comes as preparations intensify across the three counties ahead of the national celebrations.
