KANU Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Tony Gachoka has called on opposition leaders seeking the presidency to step aside and support Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gachoka made the appeal on Sunday, September 20, 2026, as debate continues over who could lead a united opposition in the next election.
In a post on X, Gachoka specifically urged former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa to support Sifuna. He also called on former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to give way to the Nairobi senator.
Gachoka said he believes Sifuna has the ability to lead the opposition into the 2027 contest. He has previously publicly backed the senator as a potential opposition flagbearer.
His latest remarks come as opposition leaders continue discussing possible alliances and the political vehicle that could be used in the 2027 election.
Sifuna has featured prominently in the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has been holding political activities and discussions with other opposition figures. The movement has also faced debate over the political party or coalition arrangement it should use going into the election.
Gachoka's position is not shared by all opposition figures. Earlier this month, Wiper Patriotic Front spokesperson Ndegwa Njiru criticised his push for Sifuna, arguing that opposition leaders should determine their political direction without being directed by individual politicians.
The debate over the opposition's presidential candidate remains ongoing, with several leaders maintaining their own political ambitions as negotiations and alliances continue ahead of 2027.
