A retired university lecturer has told an Eldoret court how his trusted driver allegedly siphoned Ksh1.4 million from his bank accounts after gaining access to his personal identification number (PIN).

Testifying before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan, the lecturer recounted how the driver, whom he had employed on a casual basis, took advantage of his trust and secretly withdrew money from multiple accounts in Kapsabet and Eldoret.

According to the complainant, he had allowed the driver to use his phone for banking transactions, unaware that the man was plotting to empty his accounts.

“I trusted him completely. I even allowed him to operate my phone to make payments, not knowing he was waiting for the right time to strike,” the former lecturer told the court.

The theft allegedly took place between December 2023 and January 2025, with the suspect reportedly transferring part of the stolen funds to a mobile number registered under a deceased person.

The complainant explained that he hired the driver occasionally to transport him between Nandi Hills and Nairobi, paying him on a daily basis since he was not a permanent employee.

After discovering the fraudulent withdrawals, the retired academic reported the matter to Naiberi Police Station in Ainabkoi Sub-County, prompting investigations that led to the suspect’s arrest.

Two Separate Transactions

Court documents show that the driver is accused of illegally accessing one of the lecturer’s bank accounts and transferring Ksh550,304, before siphoning another Ksh480,000 from a different account.

The suspect now faces multiple counts of unlawful access and theft, with prosecutors alleging he used insider knowledge of the lecturer’s financial details to carry out the scheme.

The case has been adjourned until January 26, 2026, when the hearing will resume. The accused is expected to testify and explain his alleged involvement in the crime.
