Kasipul Constituency has been thrown into tension as violence erupts during campaigns ahead of the by-election scheduled for October 27.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, also ODM National Chairperson, expressed deep concern over the incidents, urging authorities to act swiftly and ensure the safety of voters.
Reports indicate that a voter engagement event organized by ODM candidate Boyd Were was violently interrupted, leaving several people injured and property damaged.
Witnesses said unidentified attackers stormed the venue, creating panic and fear among residents.
This marks a continuation of unrest, as similar incidents were reported during a Women Empowerment Programme in Sikri, where attendees were reportedly harassed and vehicles vandalized.
In her statement, Wanga emphasized that ODM has maintained a peaceful approach throughout the campaign. She warned that attempts to intimidate supporters or disrupt the election would not succeed.
“The people of Kasipul have the right to choose their leader without fear. Our candidate and party remain committed to democratic principles,” she noted.
Wanga called on security agencies to investigate and hold both the perpetrators and those funding the violence accountable.
She also urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to guarantee a fair and transparent electoral process.
Candidates and their supporters were reminded to avoid provocative actions or statements that could escalate tensions.
The governor appealed for calm among the electorate and party supporters.
She reiterated ODM’s dedication to peaceful campaigns, insisting that unity and respect for democratic processes must guide the community despite rising political tensions.
